Home conjures up images of safety and comfort. Being at home means feeling at ease and relaxed. But what if home is no longer such a safe haven? This is the situation we are dealing with today. Home is not so safe and sound, rather it is full of toxic chemicals from cleaning products to body care products like soaps and shampoos, moisturisers and nail varnish. And outside, near your home, your neighbours are renovating using toxic paints and glue emptied into public drains. And nearby, factories are dumping their waste, down the drains and into our river systems. This is the scenario that we find ourselves in.

In this work we remix one of our favourite Korean movies ‘The Host’ with our own video taken while walking around our neighbourhood in Melbourne, past our renovating neighbours to the factories along the Yarra River in Melbourne. ‘The Host’ begins with an American scientist dumping toxic waste down the drain that empties into the Han River. Sometime later a strange and ferocious monster emerges from the river running amok eating people and taking the leftovers to its lair in the sewer system near the river. The remix will bring together the two rivers, the Han and the Yarra.

집은 안전과 안락함의 이미지를 떠올리게 한다. 집에 있다라는 것은 쉽고 편안하다는 느낌을 의미한다. 그러나 집이 더 이상 안전한 장소가 아니라고 가정해보자. 이것은 우리가 지금 현재 처해 있는 상황이다. 집은 안전하고 건강한 장소가 아닌 대신, 비누와 샴푸, 로션과 손톱 코팅제 등의 바디 케어용품들과, 청소 용품들로부터 나오는 독성 화학 물질들로 가득차 있다. 그리고 당신의 집 주위에는 당신의 이웃이 보수공사에서 하며 썼던 독성 페인트, 접착제가 하수구를 통해 비워지고 있다. 또한 근처의 공장은 하수구 저 아래로, 또 하천 시스템에 그들의 쓰레기를 투기하고 있다. 이것은 우리 스스로가 주인공이 되어버린 시나리오이다.

이 작품에서 우리는 ‘괴물’이라는, 우리가 가장 선호하는 한국 영화 한 편과, 멜버른에 있는 야라강변을 끼고 늘어서 있는 공장들 근처, 그리고 현재 보수 공사 중인 동네를 산책하면서 찍은 비디오를 함께 리믹스하는 작업을 했다. ‘괴물’은 미국인 과학자가 독성 폐기물을 한강으로 연결되는 하수구로 쏟아내 버리는 것으로부터 시작 한다. 일정 시간이 흐르고 이상하고 사나운 식인 괴물이 그 강으로부터 출현해서 사람들을 먹어치우고 남은 사람 들을 강 주위의 하수구 시스템의 은신처로 데리고 간다. 리믹스 작품을 통해 우리는 한강과 야라강이라는 두 개의 강들을 한 곳에 모았다.

Norie Neumark & Maria Miranda_biography

Norie Neumark is Professor and Chair of Media Studies and Director, Centre for Creative Arts, La Trobe University, Melbourne. Maria Miranda is a post-doctoral fellow in the School of Communication, Arts and Critical Enquiry at La Trobe University, Melbourne. In 2009 she completed her Ph.D thesis Uncertain Practices Unsitely Aesthetics at Macquarie University, Sydney.

Maria and Norie’s collaborative works have been awarded numerous prizes and have been exhibited nationally and internationally in galleries, mediaartsfestivals and events(onandoffline)including several ISEAs, Turbulence, FILE, Artspace and Performance Space (Sydney), Wollongong City Gallery, Pictura Gallery (NL), Govett-Brewster Gallery (NZ), Artemesia Gallery (Chicago), Melbourne International Arts Festival, DOCUMENTA 12 and Tate Modern. Support for their work includes The Australian Film Commission, The Australia Council for the Arts, NAVA, Arts Council London, as well as numerous artists’ residencies and bursaries such as Solar Circuit(AUS); SCANZ (NZ); TrAce (UK); MacDowell Colony (USA); Toos Neger (NL); and La Cité Internationale des Arts (France).
